  • Hi, I'm Troy Simpkins
I'm a graphic designer, so of course I love design, art and photography. I have over ten years experience working for two major university medical centers as well as working for the last five years as the web, marketing and retail specialist for Tony's Train Exchange, a specialty, online, model train store. I have a skill set that encompasses all aspects of administrative support, program promotion and marketing.

In my spare time I enjoy the outdoors, photography, woodworking, railroad history and model railroading. I and my awesome husband, Thom, look forward to soon building our first layout!

  • University of Vermont Department of Surgery
    2013 ANNUAL REPORT
These images are taken from the 2013 Annual Report I created for the Department of Surgery in the University of Vermont's Medical School. I had the opportunity to observe some major surgical procedures in the operating room with the photographer, and it was an incredible privilege that most graphic designers would never get to experience.

I worked closely with the department surgery chiefs and their staff gathering the information and photographs needed to create this beautiful annual report. I am proud to say the report effectively touted the impressive skills and accomplishments of those surgeons and their support teams working at UVM. It also successfully did the important job of marketing the Medical School's Department of Surgery to the young and upcoming medical students around the country; those seeking an exceptional learning environment where they could receive the best education and training possible.

  • Matters of the Heart
    Vanderbilt University Medical Center Posters
Created as part of Vanderbilt University Medical Center's employee health initiatives, these themed, quarterly posters promoted healthy living and presented "at a glance" hints for eating right, getting sufficient rest and staying in shape. They were placed around the medical center in high traffic areas.

    NEUROSCIENCE NEURODIAGNOSTICS BROCHURE
This informational brochure was given to patients who were scheduled for neurodiagnostic testing done by the Neuroscience Department at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt. Corporate color palettes and images of cheerful, smiling children and adults were used to appeal to the child patients who would be reviewing the information in the brochure with their parents.

This quad-fold brochure included overviews of the testing procedures, as well as the addresses for the testing locations and maps of the facilities. Directions from the main travel routes around Nashville, TN were included as were all important contact numbers and website addresses. These brochures provided the parents with all the information they needed to prepare for their child's testing.

  • Structures of Nature
    Movie Poster
I created this poster for my friend, Martin Gerigk, an internationally renowned composer and award winning filmatographer in Krefeld, Germany. He had just completed his incredible film series, Structures of Nature, and wanted an eye-catching movie poster to promote his work to film festivals around the world. I kept the design fairly simple and clean, which Martin wanted, but I used some of the most memorable images from the film to overlay a silhouette of a hand plucking a string, which was also from the film.

Martin immediately loved the design, saying that it so very well captures the true spirit of the film. He has received numerous compliments on the poster from friends and peers around the world. We later slightly altered the poster to include space for featuring the numerous awards and accolades that Structures of Nature has won. There have been many more since this update, but I am proud to have been able to help Martin champion this exceptional, cinematic work of art.

  • Photography
    giving pleasure back to living
Photography is something that brings me great joy. I love that I can capture a moment in time to share it with others. From landscapes to close-up macro photos, I have an eye for capturing dynamic images that can be used to enrich a marketing campaign or convey a specific feeling to any web or printed piece. Or maybe it's just a wonderful memory to be framed and hung on the wall for you and your family and friends to enjoy.

As you can see from this selection of my photos, I truly enjoy capturing a wide range of images from the soft, close-up macro shot of the pink calla lily, to the striking black and white image of the old L&N bridge that crosses the Cumberland River in Clarksville, TN. There is the wide open field of red clover in Georgia and the sweeping vista of the yellow rapeseed field in rural Vermont. And one of my favorites, a 3 second exposure shot of the tumbling waterfalls on the Roaring Fork Creek in Gatlinburg, TN.

In the photo of the Pittsfield General Store in Vermont I used photoshop filters to give the image a vintage feel as if it were a sepia photo from the early 1900s. And lastly the portrait of I and my husband taken on Catalina Island, where I utilized natural sunlight to provide excellent lighting of the subject with a slightly out of focus background that adds interest. Photography is not just one of my skills, it's one of my favorite pastimes.
